Default Fuel gauge problem

Hi Guys,

As you can see, this is my first post here. I just bought my first Jeep! It's a 1998 Cherokee Sport. It has just over 100K on it and it's in fantastic condition.

Anyway, I was hoping someone may be able to help me out with a problem I'm having. As I mentioned, I just bought the Jeep and when driving it home it needed fuel so I stopped and filled it up. In fact, I filled it up to the top! Not so much that fuel was spilling out but I did add a little extra after the auto stop on the pump kicked in.
Anyway, the fuel gauge seemed to be working properly when I was driving it home and when I filled it up the gauge read just over the "F". I have been driving it and have put about 70 miles or so on it but the needle hasn't moved. Is it possible that slightly overfilling it would cause the float to get stuck? If so, is there anyway to free it?

I'm assuming the fuel pump/sending unit are in the tank so anything that has to be done to it will require the tank to be dropped.

Has this happened to anyone else? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Congrats on the XJ! You'll learn to love the quirky little devils.
I wouldn't worry too much about it unless you go 100-150 miles and don't see the gauge budge. Mine is very slow to come off of "F".
Might try tapping the pump/sending unit area with a rubber mallet to see if it changes.

Thanks for the replies guys!

You are correct, I drove it a little more today and finally after about 90 miles the needle started to come off "F".

Now I just need to attent to a few small details (door check, rear hatch lock, and replace O2 sensor) and all will be well.

Look for a photo shoot of it in the next week or two. I believe it to be one of the cleanest ones in the country.
