Default Fuel Gauge Help

So i was driving on my way home from work and my tank was really empty, i was surpised i made it to a gas station. I get it filled up and it goes up to a 1/4 of the way full and doesnt move up any more. i drove it around for ten miles more at least and no movement at all.

What should i be checking?

First thought is to check the ground for the gauge.

I had a fuel gauge acting all kinds of stupid on my Comanche and it turned out t be a dirty ground behind my left rear tail light. Not sure where the ground is on the XJ, hopefully someone will chime in with that.

Also, there could be issues with the level sensor in the tank or the gauge itself. Then again, cleaning up a body ground is a lot easier than checking either one of those and wont hurt anything even if it's not the culprit.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Actually, since I can't tell you where the connector is it more like my 1 cent worth.
