Ever since I bought it about 6 months ago the gas gauge in my 92 xj hasn't worked. Just been guessing my gas level by miles. Figured id try to fix it but I don't know much about this part of the jeep. I'm thinking it could be the fuel sending unit. But I just don't know

 

Mine wouldn't work either so I did this https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f2/fue...10/#post464946 . I tested my gauge and found out some of the internals were bad. I had an extra one so I installed it and now I don't have to guess anymore. Let me know if this works for you.

 

Has the pump ever been taken out/apart?

 

Not that I know of. But I am the 3rd owner so you never know. Before I bought it, it had been sitting under a house in the keys for a few years. Maybe that has a something to do with it

 

Could be that moisture in the tank messed with the float and its contact.

But it could also be the gauge as suggested. I've just never ever heard of any fuel gauge being the source of the problem.

Our gauges are known to be junk, so it woudln't completely surprise me.
