Hey Fellow Jeepers, I have a slight problem, my 1988 Cherokee 4.0 Auto ( Full Time Off Roader) . The fuel is cutting out when going up hill. I rode for about 2 hours no problem up and down hills ( I just bought it last week) then went to climb a pretty steep hill about 200 yards long and half way up the fuel cuts off. It restarts fine and revs up and I put it into drive and cuts out over and over ( yes it was a full tank of gas because I filled it up at the gas station) anyway runs just fine on level ground and in reverse. I had to back a 1/2 mile up hill in reverse to get it back on the trailer and had zero issues with fuel cutting out. Would you all have any suggestions ?

Check fuel pump pressure and flow. Sounds like it's not producing enough pressure to push the fuel uphill, as when your your tank is higher than the carb. On a flat surface it can keep up.

It is fuel injected, I dont know if that makes a difference in your coment, because I dont have much mechanic experience and thank you for the advice, I think I am going to drain and drop the fuel tank and make sure that it is clean. The jeep has been sitting for a couple years before I bought it

Sounds like it could be the fuel pump...but yeah, if you want to test before just buying a new one, there should be a valve on the fuel rail you can hook a fuel pressure tester/gauge up to (about $40 or I believe some auto stores rent them). You could also try replacing fuel filter first, they're pretty cheap.

Mine was doing the same thing...cutting out going up steep hills and when I accelerated hard. I haven't gotten rid of my sputtering problem 100%, but replacing the fuel pump & filter definitely helped. The problem you mention is a common symptom of a fuel pump going bad. http://www.primechoiceautoparts.com/...-symptoms.aspx

The CPS is also prone to crapping out, but since you say it only does it going up steep hills, I would have to suspect the fuel pump.

I do think that is good idea to test it, and I really appreciate all the help that I am gettting. I want to get this fixed so I can put an exo cage on it, There are some great wheeling partys coming up and dont want to be broke down.
