Front driver side banging

Hi, I have had a thumping noise in my front end driver side for the past few months that was only noticeable at low speed (< 30 mph) upon first starting the vehicle. After driving it for a few minutes, the noise would not be noticeable.
However, this past week I had to engage my 4wd due to snow and the noise now sounds like a jack hammer underneath my feet (while in 4 HI).
I am looking for advice on what to look for first. My plan was to replace the driver side axle u joint because I noticed the tiniest amount of play in it while on jack stands. Any help is appreciated, thanks.
