I dunno what your really asking here but either way you should not be overheating no matter what gears your running... If you have a overheating problem its in your cooling system that u should be looking...

The PO put 4.56 in the rear but did not change the front gear. Could that cause overheating?

whats overheating? motor or front axle?

The engine overheats and the front axle leaks at the pinion gasket. While idle or slow driving there is no overheating but once I get on the road the temp climbs.

Overheating and the front axle leak are 2 different issues. But whatever you do, do not put it in 4x4 or (in the South Park ski instructor voice) you're gunna have a bad time.

to overheat while driving and not sitting still is very weird... lol... have you checked all the basics? water? no brakes are locked up right? lol...
