Front Brake Re-Fresh, (Pictures)
I bought my 2001 last January with 58,000 miles on it. The head had already been replaced. I've been freshening it up a little bit at a time - trying to put it in tip-top shape, mostly little things. I re-worked the rear brakes first since most of the rust was in the rear - replaced some brake lines including the flex line, turned the drums put the shoes back on correctly, someone had the small shoe mounted to the rear, stuff like that.
Last weekend I got after the front brakes. The calipers were pretty ugly so I just replaced them along with new pads, turned the rotors, replaced the flex lines and did some rust cleanup. I use a Permatex product called Rust Treatment. The only real snag was a previously stripped caliper mounting hole. Someone had stuck a nut on with JB Weld to back up the bolt. I drilled it out and installed my first Heli-Coil for a more permanent fix.
One thing I did was to soak the brake fittings with P.B. Blaster for about week before trying to break them loose.
Knuckle and brake plate after cleanup and wire brushing.
After rust treatment:

There, that's a little better!
I found a loose bump stop rattling around inside its coil spring so I just put some RTV on it and shoved back into place. These Cherokee bump stops both front and rear are made of some crappy foam rubber, aren't they?
