Yesterday changed all my old halogen bulbs to new LEDs and while making sure that they were all working properly I burnt out the flasher relay. After replacing it and now the front blinkers and side markers don't flash when the headlights are on, on the dash the blinkers has a solid green but flash brighter. Rear blinkers work fine. When hazards are on the blinker will flash brighter but are still solids and side markers wont flash at all, dash lights are normal (with headlights on). The second I turn headlights off there is no problems. All fuses work fine. Anyone have ideas for the problem?

What type of bulb do you have in the side markers?

Put the stock ones back in and see if it fixes it or flip the ones you have and see if you get the opposite problem. They will only flash when the headlights are on. You need a 194 that isn't polarity sensitive.

 

I flipped the bulb and they didnt turn on at all, i dont think it would be a polarity issue since its a direct current

 

​​​​​​They wouldn't even flash at all with the head lights on or off that way? I know the 01s need non polarity sensitive bulbs and will do what I thought you were saying without them. Maybe the 96 are wired differently.
You could still try the stock bulbs in there to completely rule the polarity issue out because they aren't for sure.

 

I was gonna put i back to stock tomorrow to see if anything changes, ill let you know. But ive learned 95 and 96 xjs are weird with the relays and fuses (no schematics from mauls match them) and makes it hard to find and fix stuff.

 

Yeah I've heard that. That plug seems weird to me on the newer ones. From what I've read the 2 wire can either be power or ground depending on if the head lights are on or off.

 

So seeing how your Jeep is a '96 and mine is an '00 it kinda of sounds like the problem that I had when I swapped over to LED's.
I just don't know if the '96 are set up the same way as the '00's.

Direct current is exactly where you could have a polarity issue. Alternating current does not care about polarity.

 

Sorry its been a while but the issue was with the LED bulbs in the blinkers, as soon as i put them back to stock the problem stopped, LEDs in the side markers have no effect on it. If anyone knows why the LED in the blinker cause this issue or have any bulbs that dont cause this issue please let me know.

 

IIRC, the issue is the LEDs not drawing enough current for the blinker part (forgot that official name) to work. Most places that sell LEDs also sell an inline resistor to add and fix the problem.
