I would take a pair of calipers and measure it, I'm about to do the same thing, and have to buy the socket, so let me know what size, but measuring with calipers is going to be your best bet...
the 36 doesnt have to be a 12 point but i dont know why it still wouldnt fit? like stated above measure it to see what size. BTW the 12 point is referring to the 13mm or 1/2in and i would us a 1/2in to break it if at all possible because i pretty much broke one of my lesser 3/8 drives. no name but still wouldnt want to risk it because those 3 are on there good!! haha good luck

You don't have to take that nut off to replace a U-joint. You can just pull the hub and axle and replace the U-joint while the outer stub is still attached to the hub. But in case you do want to take the hub nut off it is definitely 36mm. There is a cap that goes over the nut that you will need to take off first and that is probably why your socket will not fit.

yeah, as bill said, you don't need to remove the 36mm nut if all you're replacing is the u-joint. you can do it with the hub unit still attached.
unless you plan on replacing the hub bearing unit, then yeah, remove that 36mm nut, but i'd use an impact on it. either electric one or air.
i find the electric one better.
