Front axle U-joint 'size'
Well, after what I thought was a bad shock which I replaced, I kept having a on and off kinda scrunch/cracking sound coming from the right front wheel are when taking left hand corners and going through some irregular road surface at the same time. Crawled under the Jeep and found my U-joint has some, although minimal, movement. as far as I know, there should not be any play, so I reckon this could be the cause of the unwanted sound..
Never done this, so youtubed it, front axle removal should be do-able (need to source a 36 mm socket somewhere).
I know the u-joints in front and rear driveshafts are 1310, but what are the u-joint in the left and right front axle?
Cheers for the input.

search 5x297
they are the same size as the 5x760.
our jeeps came stock with the 297 and the 760 is a direct replacement.

I don't have any play in the wheel, like I can't 'wiggle' it....I reckon that should still be good. Guess there is no other way of telling beforehand whether I will need a new bearing (other than taking everything apart first)...dunno, no experience with them ...yet..

well, not different regarding the front axles, as those will be all the same.
Front axle u-joints are different from the front (and rear) driveshaft u-joint.
U-joint are available everywhere, not an obscure item to get. They come in serviceable and non-servicable (at least for the driveshaft uni's that is). Non -serviceable are solid and therefore deemed stronger...but you cant 'service' them

Now, looking a bit ore into this, I came across sites that mention that the 5-760x is a ' 1310' model U-joint, and that for the XJ there are two version : the one with IIRC 1.18 inch cap diameter and a smaller 1.062 inch or something.
So what's the story with this?

Found the answer: apparently the 94''s used the smaller u-joint, later years the bigger one.

pretty much.
94 and down with the 231 t-case used the smaller sized 260 joints.
all 95 and up and all pre 95, ABS equipped, with 242 t-case uses the larger 297/760 joints.
