Front Axle noise in 4H
I realize I posted this already, I did a crappy job as I was typing from a tablet with my hands full of grease... and I was pissed... sorry.
How can I tell what the whirring noise is from in the front. It sounds like a metal on metal grinding/whirring. To my best guess, it's a bearing taking a dump, but how can I tell which one.
I have all new hubs bearing, U-joints in the axles and front drive to diff, and cleaned/greased axle shafts.
75W90 Mobil 1 diff fluid just went in. It rides fine, no noise until I put it in 4H. Then at 5MPH it starts and wails like a wolf. While I was putting in the driveshaft u-joint, I noticed a lot of slop in the ring/pinion. I could turn the shaft about 1/8"-1/4" before I would hear the axle turn.
Also, to add insult to injury, it is a ***** to get it into 4L and even harder to get it out.
Bottom line is I spent all summer slowly picking at this project. I'm happy with it, the products are great from Zone Offroad and IRO. But it totally killed the mojo when I heard that noise.
Thanks for any help you guys can lend. I'm stumped and naturally disappointed.

That amount of slop is normal in my experience. Mind you mine might be crap but I have that slack without this noise lol.
You sure this noise is from the front and not from your transfer case?

No, I'm not sure. I see someone else has posted a thread with the same issues, and I was reading through it. I'll take a look at the fluid level in my TC. Maybe I can pinpoint it.
It might be the source of the issues. Sounds $$$$ either way. I'm sticking with it though. I want to finish this project.
