SuperTech, NAPA, AUTOExtras, Oreillys, Vatozone, all have good, cheap conventional oils for BreakIn short time use. Then once broke in FillEr Up with(usually 1,500to 2,000 miles in my Humble opinion), Mobil 1, Motul 300V, LiquiMoly HardCore Syns and DriveHerHard!

I would recommend Brad Penn motor oil. It's not overly expensive and it's formulated with zinc which is better for our engines.

Also, the fram filter probably isn't a good choice, so I wouldn't suggest one of those. There are lots of references on the internet about how poorly they are designed.

FRAM, FARM filters arent my first choice either, but with many years experience using them and having only Good results,...I would use and recommend them. I would first recommend a Purolator Classic 30001. They are actually .50c cheaper than a FRAMFARM at Wallys.

Oh, and JoeGibbs does make a Good, Though a bit thin for my taste 5w-30 Break-In Oil. So does Royal Purple(In a 10w-30 weight, and ScamzOil on a 30 weight. But I dont care for those guys.

For break-in, use PYB, MS5k, or another comparable conventional motor oil. I wouldn't recommend synthetics because they're too expensive to be dumping at 30 minutes, 500 miles, and 2,000 miles. I would use a Purolator PureOne filter for the 500 mile period, and a Puro Classic for the first 30 minutes. Bosch, Puro Pure1, Mobil 1, Wix, Fram TG, and other excellent oil filters will serve you well after the break-in period. I prefer Wix and Puro Pure1 because they are about $6 on Amazon w/ free shipping. I get free 2-day shipping on most stuff.

Hey, Salad, thanks for that link, too! It was a good read. I would use a synthetic for break-in, but like I said, it's kind of expensive to dump it twice after minimal use.

Just my opinion form work experence, I tell my customers after a engine rebuild to change oil at 500mi,1500,3000, never use synthitic during break in. use a good quility 10w-30 for the jeep. I use 5w-30 for engines with VCT and turbo. keep rpm down for first 500mi, no heavy pulls, etc.

Why not use synthetic?

I was always recommeded not to use it by some top builders. I stick with what has worked best with what i have been doing. Non syn helps with break in the rings.

Hmm. Plenty of people say to not use it, but no one ever gives a good reason or explanation why it doesn't work well.

DON'T USE IT!
Why?

Thicker viscosity with non syn, sticks to moving parts better.

But you want oil to flow, not stick. When it sticks, it heats itself and the part up and doesn't lubricate well.

Someone else gave a decent reason: expensive

I don't know much about breakin, but I don't think most if synthetic's properties really matter that much. Additive package seems to be where it's at (ZDDP).
