Default Freeze/expansion plugs installation help

I'm installing new freeze plugs in the driver side of my engine block and I'm having serious issues. Everything I've read online (including this forum) says to use a large socket and a hammer. I'm not having any luck getting them in, and I already destroyed one plug in the process (it didn't go in straight, so I had to pry it out). Are there any other more effective methods? I'm sure they don't use a socket/hammer in the factory. I'm stumped.

There is a tool made for installing freeze plugs and it should be able to be found at any Car Quest. I do not remember the name of said tool because I also use the socket and hammer method.

Freeze plugs are usually a tight fit but, in the past, I have only used a hammer to put mine in.. If you are having so much trouble, maybe they aren't the right size. I don't know if there are more than one size for our XJ's as I have never had to replace any on my XJ yet. I do know that on my '76 Power Wagon, there are different sizes. If there is only one size, maybe the person at the parts store gave you the wrong ones.
