Default Free Jeep

So brand new here, and fairly new to Jeeps.

An old timer I work with has a 2 door Cherokee he said I could have, just have to go get it. It has something wrong with it, but it drives. I am not looking for a DD, and finally have room for a project in my yard.

He said it is an 85 or an 86 with a straight 6 in it. Now I have looked it up and found that they didn't come with a I6, but that just means he doesn't know what's in it.

Regardless of what is currently in it, my question is with a reasonable budget, what can I put in it's place?

I have been reading about the 4.0 strokers people are doing for fairly short money. Would that be a straight swap?

Thanks for the help,
Ed

That would be a straight swap with minimal fabrication? I would like to go 4.0 but I want to make sure this is something I can accomplish.

Well think of it this way.

If it is really clean and it costs say $1000 (I don't really know what it would cost) to do the swap then you have a really clean cherokee with a 4.0 for $1000. But if it isn't think of what you would have to spend to get it up to par and see if that is more than you could just buy one for?

My girlfriend got her Jeep for $2000. It is extremely clean with a new tranny and t case, dealer serviced with receipts, and it runs really strong.. Has a full lift, Mopar ECU, Borla exhaust, 31 inch swampers, blah blah blah. We have about $10,000 worth of receipts for work it has done to it.

Not all cherokees you find might be that much of steal but you could probably come close?

OK, thank you for your answers. I am interested in rebuilding a 4.0 anyways. I was looking to make sure I wasn't biting into something I could not finish.

you can never go wrong (well almost never) with something free! Worse come to worse you part it out, or scrap it for easy money.

pick that the Jeep up for free, pick up a second Jeep on the cheap and swap over the drivetrain.

Two doors are cool Jeeps. Thats what I would do, or pick up a Chevy with a 350 and throw the ***** in. There are plenty of swap kits on the market.
