I just picked up a 9" big bearing with the new style Torino ends to put under my XJ and Im in the process of rebuilding it and adding 4.56s and a locker. It comes from a 63-72 F100 with 3.25s so it for sure needs to be freshened up.
I have attached a few pics to see if anyone knew what this inner piece is that is fitted inside the axle tube and how to get it out. Im pretty sure its a seal but really have no idea. I say this cause it feels like it has a rubber flap that goes around the very inner circle where the shaft would go through.

those numbers look like seal numbers to me but not sure. Cant say i have ever seen one that far down the tube though. Go to the parts store and ask to see an axle seal for that rear end is what i would do.

I've only messed with Dana axles before so I'm stumped. On the axle shaft there appears to be a seal on it. I'll get some pics of the axle shaft here in a few. The bearing is huge and everything fits between the end of the axle shaft and that circular thingy lol. When I was cleaning the tube out an O ring came out the same size of inside of the axle tube. Don't know if that means anything though?

The "CR on that thing is "Chicago Rawhide". It is a lip style oil seal. The numbers on it should easily cross reference to a new part.
To remove it, either grab it with a hook and yank it out or get a dent puller, screw it into the metal part of the seal and pull it out.

If the number is 15141, the seal is this one. Otherwise, just match the number to a Chicago Rawhide Part and you're golden.

2EVIL4U>>> do you think those are the original seals or are the CR seals an aftermarket type seal for back in the day that someone replaced already?

CR is about the most common oil seal brand on earth. I'd wager they are OEM. If you can get them out (without scoring up the ID of the axle), clean up the bore really well, lightly lube it with light oil and tap the new seal into place with a piece of PVC or a big socket that only touches the metal part of the seal. There should be a lip in the axle tube that the seal butts up against to square it up.
And, no problem. I'm a Mechanical Reliability Engineer for a big chemical company. My job is to prevent leaks of any kind.

Thats awesome! I tried using a metal hook to pull the old ones out but didnt have any luck. Theres a lip behind the seal like you said. Didnt try for very long either as its 9PM here in Denver. That link you posted is the right diameter but it doesnt look like the ones that are in there now. Is it just newer and better technology and thats why they look dif?

Sometimes the pictures are just a stock seal photo and not the actual seal. Once you get them out, take them to a napa and they should be able to set you up. Good luck!

It is a seal, I've changed out many of them. The big bearing axle seal may be a little harder to find but you most likely can find it at any parts store.
it is a great axle, the ring gear is actually bigger and stronger then a Dana 60. I added a picture of a typical seal puller.
