Whats the problem? Rust in a dried out coolant passage is normal. Dump the coolant from a brand new motor, let it sit for awile you will find the same thing.

Throw some atf in each cyl and let that sit n for awhile so when your turning it over it doesnt score the cyl walls to bad. Also if you have an air copressor you can get a cyl leak down tester and run a testr on each cyl to see how bad it is. Beside its just work and a little money to pull the head have it magna fluxed for cracks. It all depends if your trying to do it right or half way just to get by. if your doing it right as long as the crank is good the head has no cracks and the rods are good then the engine will work fine once its bored and surfaced, and the heads rebuilt. If you're just trying to do a garage job definatly buy a leak down tester and test it. That will tell you exactl whats wrong with that engine.

if you are doing a complete rebuild, the rust is nothing. have the block hot tanked. and like "new toy" said have all the other stuff done as well. do it once and do it right, you'll never have to go back in it.
