So if I drain the converter (providing it has a plug) and the pan, then refill I'd be ok? To drop the pan on mine requires dropping the long arm because rear pan bolts can't be reached. Even tried with a 1/4 universal and socket.

Its this simple.. Find your drain plug on the transmission(look at pic) drain old fluid out. Fill with new fluid ,,its going to be about 3 1/2 to 4qrts to fill back up. Pay attention to how full you are filling it checking level via trans dip stick(Check fluid in neutral with motor running when fluid is warm/hot) Take for drive about 5mins then Drain-R again. Do this until the fluid is nice and red looking(not brown) should take maybe 2-3 drain and refills to get it nice and clean. Use DEX/MERC III not ATF-4..

Or... change it with your oil about 4 times...
Should look nice.
Flush places are scams.

Depends what you mean by, "flush".

There are flushes, and there are flushes, and people throw the term around without any attempt to define what they mean, so we have a mass of confusion on the subject.


  1. Machine Flush Type 1: Uses high pressure (and sometimes reverse flow) to flush out the old fluid. Sometimes a chemical cleaner, too. Definitely bad mojo. Many transmissions have been ruined this way. It may appear to do wonderful things in the short term. It may not cause any problem at all. It may work great. Don't bet on it. Runs the risk of using the wrong fluid, which is really bad.
  2. Machine Flush Type 2: Uses the transmission's own pump to circulate the fluid through the machine where it is replaced with clean fluid. Runs the risk of using the wrong fluid, which is really bad, but as long as the right fluid is used, there is nothing wrong with this at all. It cannot hurt, it can only help. No, fresh fluid is NOT a danger to your transmission.
  3. Manual Flush Type 1: The old drain & fill repeatedly. Can't hurt, may work wonders. The downside is that it takes time, and you are repeatedly diluting the bad old fluid instead of replacing it, and no, it's not as simple as "by the time you've done it X times you have flushed out the old fluid". Dilution doesn't work that way.
  4. Manual Flush Type 2: See my sig, #3. Essentially a home-brew version of #2. More effective than drain & fill. Replaces all that is possible to get in one shot. Cannot hurt, and may be a miracle in a jug for an ailing transmission. Requires at least one assistant. Two is better.

OP: You've asked the same question in two threads an hour apart. Hopefully you have received plenty of confirmation that the drain and fill method is easy, effective, safe and relatively inexpensive. Go get some fluid and a wrench and git-r-done!
