Flat Towing 99 XJ (I know this has been covered, quick owners manual question!)
Hi, I just bought a 99 XJ Cherokee Automatic Part Time 4x4 to pull behind my motorhome. I've seen at least a dozen opinions on the procedure so I was going to rely on the owners manual, but it confuses me!!
Owners manual page
If I step 1. Shift the transmission into N and then 2. automatic transmission into D and make sure there is no movement..... well, there is surely going to be movement from shifting the transmission direct from N to D !!
I'm assuming they they have step 2 and 3 in the wrong order?
I almost feel like 4 and 5 are in the wrong order as well. It would seem more natural to put it in Park and then turn the key to OFF. I'm guessing that order doesn't really matter.
Like I mentioned in the thread title, I've seen so many opinions! Is it this simple:
Transmission to N
Transfer case to N
Transmission to D to make sure no movement
Key to OFF position
Transmission to P
