Default fixiable or not

i just picked up a 2000 xj dont know the milage right now but will later, the man i got it off of told me that it had a blown motor. he stated that he was driving it one day and it stated making all kinds of racket and then over heated so he pulled to the side of the road and had it toed home. so when i gont it home today i stated pulling off the accessories and when i pulled the sparkplugs i noticed that #1 plug has smashed but the rest of them where fine. so i guess im asking if the timing chain was broke would it cause the racket and over heating or would it be something else, and if it is the timing chain will i be able to save the motor by replacing it and putting it back in time or not?

Cool

if the spark plug is "smashed" I would guess the rod is broken. But i could be wrong.
