Yes there are bolt holes left over. I believe most people just trim the fenders beyond the holes to get rid of them. This is what I plan to do with my '87.

Taking the flares off is easy, especially if you have an older Jeep. You might even say taking off the flairs on an older Jeep is a 'snap'. Each flare is held on by I think 6, maybe a few more, small bolts and nuts. All but 2 of my bolts broke after a few turns of the wrench. Broke the bolts off and pulled. Easy as that.

 

Keepin the stock flares and untrimmed (so far). I will be trimmimg the front lower section since that is the only place that rubs when flexed. I can understand the legal aspect of no fenders, but not just removing the flares. TN only has bumper heigth laws at 22 inches from the ground, but I've been running bumperless for 8 months. Even if I had them they would be to high.

I personally vote to keep the flares, I think someone else mentioned that it gives it a more finished look and I would agree.

However, I havent owned a 97 or newer model and understand that the flares mount differently and have more of a tendancy to pop off if smacked or rubbed by a tire.

if your on 31's and 4.5" of lift it may make your tires look small

I would wait till you get bigger tires so it doesnt look weird

seriously the $ is the issue. I had 31's at my house so i figured i would put em on. Plus i wouldnt want to have to regear and watch my gas mileage go doooown

 

Its been one of my favorite mods. One of my flares was removed by a tree so I decided to take them all off along with all the plastic. 32s have not effected milage or performance. They fit no problem either.

 

One thing to think about is where you live. If you live down a dirt road like I do and you want to keep your xj looking decent then flairs are a must with those larger tires. without the flairs it slung the mud all they way up to my rear quarter glass.

 

i dont think my mud flaps work, but the police cant say there not there

 

so my xj is not really a daily driver but does see alot of pavement. i would go flareless but i'm on the out skirts of the big city and got a fix it ticket. i told the cop there was no way i'm gonna $h*t out 450 bones for flares. plus he got me for no mud flaps...
