Default fast beeping with the key off/out

So when I got home tonight, the '99 did something new. When I shut the ignition down, I got a fast, non-stop beeping from the dash. The only way it would stop was to turn the key to the "on" position and/or start it up. Turning it off would always start the beep back up. Not wanting to kill the battery, I disconnected the negative and reconnected, and it is no longer beeping. I did everything I could to get it to do it again. When I shut it down originally, I turned the park lights off at the same time, and I wondered if it thought the lights were on. But alas, it does not beep like that when I turn it off regardless of light position.

Does anyone know why this may have happened? I'd like to prevent it from embarassing me in front of company

any ideas? This happened again today. It was after another very long day at work. It is like it knows when I am extra irritable.

This time, the lights were not at all involved, so that eliminates that idea.

I drive it daily, and it has taken a week to do this again. What the heck?

Similar issue here.

It started with my lock cylinder not wanting to turn backwards aka the place where they key can enter and exit the cylinder freely. So I started pulling the key out forcibly (the lock cylinder was worn down) NBD. Then I figured I may as well replace the lock cylinder since that must be the problem. I did this and everything SEEMED fine I could remove my key! But, now when there is no key in the ignition and the door is open I get the constant beep as if to say there is a key in the ignition or the headlights are on.

So I unplugged the battery and waited a while and still same thing, I figured for my 245k mile jeep this was okay so I drove to work today and when I got home, I couldn't turn the key back to remove it! I took the lock cylinder out and re-seated it, all is well again but the beeping remains. Any ideas?

If it helps I recently replaced my ignition switch, while trying to figure out why my Blower motor wasn't working..

It sounds like you need a new ignition switch and cylinder.
