Default Extremely bumpy ride

I've always thought trucks rode the same, rough and bumpy. Just overall bad.
Yesterday I drove my friends qx4 and was surprised at how smooth and comfortable it was. I could fall asleep that's how smooth it was.
My xj's ride is so bumpy it feels like you're riding a rollercoaster. What could he causing this? Bad shocks?
I want to lift 2 inches soon so I was considering getting 4 new shocks at the same time I lift. Would I need different shocks if I lifted?

The XJ is supposed to be a bumpy ride

But seriously, are you stock right now? It shouldn't be THAT bumpy then. Many things to look at, yes shocks are a good start. If you'll be lifting, you'll need new shocks. If you want to go top of the line, look at Blistein or Fox shocks. Mediocre shocks, look at Skyjacker, Rancho, etc.

Also, take a look at your motor mounts and transmission mount. You'll have a lot more rough of a ride if those are bad

most lift kits aren't going to make your xj ride super smooth but once the xj's stock suspension gets worn out the ride is absolutely terrible (shocks and rear leafs were killing me on mine when it was stock)

I'll take a look at my motor and tranny mounts but yeah I'm stock. Only difference is I'm on 31s, could that be affecting it?

My leaf springs are a bit saggy and I don't think my shocks are so good. Its really bad, I bounce all over the road. Girls always complain haha.
I hate taking it on long trips because I always has to stop

It's a Jeep. I am on my fourth XJ right now and they all like that. If you want a smooth running Jeep your going to have to get the Grand Cherokee.

your shocks and springs are probably just worn out. If you lift it, you'll get rid of a lot of the bumpiness. If you want a smooth ride, just read up on the MANY lift kits and see what will fit your needs/budget.

And you can't really compare the ride quality of a QX4 to a solid axle Cherokee. That's like comparing apples to oranges.

x2, a solid axle truck is very different from independant suspension vehicles...
