Question Exterior door handle repair?

I tried to open my '88 XJ rear drivers side door today and the door handle push button pushed through and dropped inside the door. I tried to remove the pannel but can't figure out how to get the interior handle through the door pannel. I've never been inside the door pannel. I'd sure appreciate some pointers...Thanks.

My son took the Jeep to a shop today and they quoted him $340.08 for the repair. $289.00 for the part, $29.40 for labor and $22.40 taxes..I can't understand why it is so high...
I have searched the archives and can not find anything that is helpful..Is there a reason no one has responded to my simple question????

Alright... I'll answer lol.. The inner handle has 2 rods on it with what I call spin clips. Reach in after you got it loose with a flat head screw driver and pop the clip off remove rod and your done. It's easy once you figure it out. And outer handles at the junk yard are any where from 15 to 40 bucks.... Depending where you go

Interior handle... the armrest or window crank? The armrest has two phillips screws on the underside you need to remove, then you turn the armrest to unseat the top portion as you pull it off. The window crank just pulls straight off.

od covered the linkage rods, might add that there are two screws holding handle assembly to the doorframe.

On my 99 the two rear exterior handles both got messed up right around the same time. One of them pushed inside, and the other u would just push in and it would just stay in. (Neither of the two doors would open from the outside) I opened the door panel up for the one where the button pushed all the way inside, spent like an hour trying to make it work again. There was so much mud and gunk in there where I guess they pre greased it, I got so frustrated trying to figure it out and align this spring peice up. I called it a day and now open my rear doors from the inside

..Your wink was well deserved..Thanks for all the help. Now that it's done...I was thinking it was more complicated...especially since the shop, Valley Collision Center in Victorville, CA was quoting such a high price for the door handle..$289.00 for part #55024.927 (exterior door handle)....Thanks again...
