Default Exhaust Problem, Help please

After this winter, I have noticed that my cat is making a lot of noise. I have a 1998 cherokee and I was thinking about just taking the cat off and running a straight pipe. Since there is an O2 sensor after the cat, if I tooke the cat off would that cause the check engine light to come on? I was thinking about doing it tomorrow but wanted to see what you guys had to say before I did anything stupid. I really dont want to spend the money on a new cat since they are expensive. Any help would be great, thanks.

My 98 has no cat, it was like that when i bought it. CEL stays on and i assume it is because of the missing cat. I have heard on other vehicles running w/out a cat can burn up your valves but not sure of the truth in that. And yes it is ILLEGAL so if you live in a state that does emission tests you will get a fine at best.

Emissions tests, or not, it is illegal!! It also helps the environment, so why not run one?? Sorry if we mods are a little harsh on this subject, but it gets brought up a lot. It is harmful to or lifestyle to even talk about not running a cat, so please, put one on, it's the right thing to do!! Thanks!!

For those of you that choose not to run one, first and foremost...you should, PERIOD!! Secondly, if that doesn't sink in, please do not talk about it here, it will not be tolerated!! Any discussion about it will be deleted, thanks!!

Yep Magnaflo is what I went with on my cat, it's high flow so it doesn't restrict the exhaust but good on the enviro..

Thanks guys for all the imput, I was actually thinking about just replacing the cat anyways, I slept on it and figured that was the best way to go cuz you guys are right, it is better for environment and if the whole thing about burning the valves up is true, will, I really dont want to do that. So thanks guys.

the majority of my trail toys have never had one and most that did at one point now have the o2 senor dummys so nothing runs abnormal. But I also remember when cats were over $200 for most vehicles and therefore for a play toy it was hard to justify
