Wow. I've been working on a friend's 99 Cherokee (I'm much more familiar with Asian cars) and have been wondering about that. I couldn't figure any way that the pipe could have been smashed by a rock or anything else, since it's up high and fairly well protected. There's no apparent reason why the pipe needs to be compressed like that, since it's wide open in the area.

I needs to be their otherwise the knuckle and u joints on the front drive shaft will smash it to look like that. If your really pushing the limits on your stock jeep that is. Every xj i have seen has it but my second 89 was stock no lift and was mashed up alot worse than that but my current 96 has the same exact dent that you have
