The end of which pipe? You're talking about the donut gasket where the manifold bolts to the actual exhaust pipe?
I'd say you have the wrong gasket or your exhaust pipe is egged out.
Did the gasket come with the manifold?

I just replaced mine and the new one was reluctant to go on due to rust. I just cut a strip of sandpaper and buffed the rust off the flange that the donut slips over.

I just bought a new manifold, the gasket goes in between the manifold and the pipe. The old one is still on the old manifold, this one will not slide over the end of the mew manifold so I can then bolt the pipe and manifold back together.
