I used 2 hi-flow cats on my Olds when I went from single to Dual exhaust on it, and that was cuz of emissions regulations. I never had a problem with the law hitting me for it. I do know its illegal to tamper with emissions systems, unless and adequate replacement is put in place of what is removed. Running a cat actually doesn't cost you that much H.P. I'd say run one, it won't hurt anything.

yeah its illegal in mn. what year is your xj? 97+ has an o2 sensor behind the cat so no cat messes things up. pre-97, only one o2 sensor before the cat so just a big loss in torque if your exhaust is being dumped right after it leaves the engine. no cat to a cherrybomb sounds pretty good..

Check your local laws, if there is no visual inspection you should be fine.

In maryland we have emissions and inspections, however because my jeep is 20 yrs old i can get a Historic tag and bypast those, and do what i will to my jeep. But usally historic tags in the mid-west are like 30yrs. States on the coasts have salt water air so things rust faster, so most of ours is 20yrs.

well my cat is rusted to hell in henn basket lol, so i was thinkin of piping it back to a cherry bomb and still using a stock tail pipe. where i live as long as you aren't super loud the cops dont bother you, plus my uncle is the sherriff , mine is a 91, like i said there is NOTHING running to the cat or behind it for emmissions, honestly i cant see anything that resembles emmitions except the one o2 sensor on the down pipe, so wut im asking is, if i pipe it back to a cherry bomb and still using a stock tail pipe will it hurt anything? thx guys

I know back down at one of the race shops I worked at, my buddy had a '99 Ram and had a blocked cat. The dealer wanted a ridiculous amount for a new one, so he hollowed his out the best he could. Then one day it was acting up again, So I told him to cut the thing off and bring it over by my workstation. Well, about an hour later it was back welded on the truck after we split it right above the seam on the topside, gutted that nasty pig, added a thru-pipe and welded it all back together. Pretty sneaky... Solved the cat problem, didn't mess with the computer on it any, and loved the fact he could run our leaded race fuel without worry. Now talk about an emissions violation, hell with the cat, the EPA would crap their britches if they knew we ran leaded fuel. But no one knew, and no one really cared. Unless you have a guilty conscious from hell, remember:

It's only illegeal if you get caught!
