So I was wondering if would be okay if my exhaust was exiting from under my xj I'm putting a purple hornie on it and I was just wondering if it would be fine if I didn't have a trail pipe on it for about a week

well, depends where. if you mean running "straight pipes" for a week, it'll be friggen loud and annoying and you might get a ticket. if you mean, run it with a muffler on it, just nothing after the muffler, you can do that but you are going to want some sort of down turn so you're not just pumping exhaust onto the floor and on fuel lines and brake lines and whatever else.
Not legal in some states, not sure about yours. Exhaust has to exit after the "passenger area", which with an XJ is the entire thing.
I can tell you from personal experience that a leaky exhaust and cargo floor rust holes makes an interesting combination when stopped, lol. Cough.
For one week? Keep a window rolled down.

I had my cherry bomb extreme on without the tailpipe connected for about 5 minutes. It was loud. Really loud. At least run a turn down or a side pipe. Beware of tickets. I used a piece of cheap flex pipe to connect mine to my tailpipe for now until I get a solid pipe. It doesn't seal to well, But its better than breathing in some good old carbon monoxide, sulfur oxide, and whatever the hell else comes out of the 4.0

If you don't want to buy all the pipe then just run your cat and muffler and put a turndown before your rear axle at that hanger. Don't put it under the axle though. And use your cat. If you like the loud exhaust then buy a high flow cat. I loved running a straight pipe to my magnaflow until I figured out that it's frowned upon on the forum and it's definitely not worth the ticket.
Y'all don't know what loud is! It's loud inside the cab cause of all the open area admit drones.. My buddy has a 99'and has been strait piped for weeks and it just sounds like a gay tractor isnt loud at all. But I'm comparing this to things I consider loud
