Erratic Shifting
Hey guys. I recently got to take my newly purchased 2001 on a long drive, about 225 miles each way. I noticed a few times that it would shift between 3rd and 4th unnecessarily. However, when I put on cruise control (which works intermittently), the shifting problem seemed to go away. I tried to research a little bit, and was coming up with the possibility of a bad TPS. I don't have a multimeter, and wanted to see if anyone had any input before I replace the TPS.

Unlikely the issue, but maybe, and something to set anyway. There is a TV, "kick-down" cable from the throttle linkage to the trans. (I assume yours has one). There's a button on top of the housing that loosens it for adjusting. I set mine with about zero play. No slack, no tension.
There is a simple process to "auto" set it...maybe someone will post it up.

Just have to ask. Did you adjust it right.
1) depress grey button
2) slide plunger in fully
2) release grey button
4) go into jeep and fully press accelerator and you should hear clicking as the TV adjusts and you'll be done.
And if it's the TPS or another sensor, honestly if you didn't have a meter you're chasing your tail. Investing in a cheap one comes in handy. Good luck

All above posts need to be rechecked and a trans service is in order if it has not been done.
To better help you more info is needed about your jeep. Is it stock everything or lifted, larger tires (might need to be re-geared if so) could be several different things. Be sure and check for any CEL's for codes also.

Thanks for the replies guys.
Tire size is 235/70/16 and it's not lifted. This was just a highway drive with some hills, but it wasn't just doing it on the hills. I don't know how long it's been doing it because I just bought it. Trans fluid is good, but I haven't had it serviced.
That's how I set the kick down cable, it has a tiny bit of slack, not sure how I'd get that out.

A tiny bit of slack is OK.
There is probably a switch on the brake petal that unlocks the torque converter when you touch the brake. Radi had a process to check it I don't fully remember. You drive at say 55 in drive, then touch the brake and continue. I think the rpm's should go up for just a second then return to where they were. Something like that!
