So I rolled my 94 4D jeep cherokee Sport back in January and totaled the body but engine and transmission are fine. I recently bought a 95 2D jeep cherokee that is basically just the shell. I am wondering if anybody has any pointers for me when it comes to swapping the engine and transmission and if there are any issues I may encounter. This is my first engine and transmission swap ever so any advice would be good. Thank you.

When you pull the engine and trans apart. start with the two bolts at the top of the bell housing. If you loosen the other bolts first, it binds up those two top ones and you will be hating life.
Also, make sure you have the right tool for those two. A few of them are normal hex bolts (6 sided socket highly recommended!), but most of them (later ones?) have an inverted Torx head.

No major gotchas that I know of. 94 and 95 were virtually identical as far as I know. Also if you do separate the engine and tranny, unbolt the t/c from the flexplate and leave it in the trans. Make sure it's fully inserted before you tighten up the bellhousing bolts, otherwise you will damage the pump in the trans. The t/c should be able to move forward-aft just a touch before you reinstall the flexplate bolts. If the bellhousing still won't pull away from the engine, looks for a couple of screw going in from the front.

Will I have to pull the engine and tranny apart in order to swap them over or can I move them over as one piece?Originally Posted by lawsoncl

Yeah, I have seen other threads where people talk about using that method. I think the effort of removing the radiator and pulling it out that way is probably a lot easier than separating the engine and trans. Originally Posted by lawsoncl

A good hoist is required, of course. A floor jack with some good wheels is probably also a big help, to support the rear of the trans while you pull the whole assembly forward. Or maybe a furniture dolly. They have some cheap ones at Harbor Freight that would serve the purpose.

IF you seperate the trans from the engine, remove the crank sensor before you start so the flexplate doesnt smack it going back together.
