Default Engine swap? Newbie here.....

Hi, and thanks for reading. Ive owned several grand Cherokee over the years, but luckily have never had to do any major mechanical. That changed last Friday when the 4.0 vlew in my 1997. A friend at work just rolled a fairly low mileage 2004 Grand Cherokee with the 4.0, after hydro planing. It's totalled, but all superficial body damage. All of the mechanicals are intact.
What problems will I encounter swapping both the engine and trans? Thanks in advance for any help.....

Grand Cherokee 4.0 interchange is 2001-2004 I think. Just went through this process about a year and a half ago.

Thanks for the reply. I know some of the electronics, etc. May be different, bit was hoping with some swapping around, I could get it to work.

The block is different enough that none of the accessories will fit.

correct. 1993-1998 ZJ grand Cherokees and 1999-2004 WJ grand Cherokees blocks doesn't interchange. The mounting bosses for motor mounts and accessories don't exist or moved to different places.

Your best bet is to get 1987-2001 XJ blocks, 1993-1998 ZJ blocks, or 1997-1999 TJ wrangler blocks.
