Hey guys, I blew the head gasket in my 4.0 and while in the process did some pretty extensive damage so I'm going to just swap in a new motor. My problem is I have an 89 XJ and I'm having a really hard time finding an 89 motor. Will a pre 96 4.0 bolt up just as easily? The junkyard keeps telling me no but when I helped my brother change the motor in his 96 ZJ we got a motor from a 94 ZJ and it went in just the same.

the motor itself will fit, probably not run tho. you'll want to either swap some of the older ancilliary items onto the newer motor (sensors, manifolds etc) or swap in newer harness/sensors etc. in your older XJ.

that's pretty vague, but if you're capable of changing the motor in the first place, when you get it all in front of you it will make sense.
