Engine Swap - 87 4.0 XJ for a 95 XJ 4.0
Im stressing because time is limited and Im stuck.
Will my 87 4.0 exaust , throttlebody , manifold, bolt onto the 95 4.0.
Some say yes others say no.
I purchased the new 4.0 from a junk yard ,so I would like to know if the 87 4.0 manifold and exaust will bolt onto the 95 4.0 . If I know for sure then I will unbolt and have no problems. Otherwise I will have to exchange it for a 1990 or older.
I understand the computer from the 87 will not run the 95 .So I have to change over everything including distributor and injectors. This is no problem because just about everything form the 87 was new. All new parts.
Please someone , help me out. Im stuck and only have 2 more days to work on it where it is sitting.
Thanks in advance

You can use the later short block but you need to retain the Renix head. Bolts from the manifilds will match but the ports are different and it will run very poorly. The Renix block has a knock sensor which is not in the HO block. The casting is there but the HO is not tapped for it.
So the answers you got before were both right to a point. Keep the Renix block and build a stroker.

If you want to use the HO block and the older Renix head you will be fine. The older Renix is a very strongly built block and with it and a 258C.I. crank you can build a 4.6 or 4.7 L stroker thus more power. So don't discard the older block is all I'm saying about the stroker.

The problem with the renix is , I was on my way home from a surf trip.About 90 miles from home. It got hot , so I removed the thermostat.
It got hot again in like 30 miles,I let it cool added more water went another 30 miles , got hot , then it wouldnt restart.
Is it possible that I only blew the head gasket? I found a half gallon of water in the oil pan.
Maybe I can just replace the head gasket? And keep the Renix?

You could have done some tests to determine if you had a blown head gasket or a clogged radiator before you pulled the motor. Now the best thing is to pull the Renix head and have it planed by the machine shop and have them do a valve job (3 angle) on it and put it on the good HO block.
You are too late to do those tests with the engine pulled. Pull the Renix knock sensor and tap the HO block to accept it and put it back together, with the newly machined Renix head.
That should get you running. You then need to check that the radiator wasn't your primary problem to begin with.

So , I have a 1987 4.0 renix with possible cracked block or badly blown head gasket.( 1 gallon of water in oil pan ) The 1987 has a perfect tranny, and all new engine accesories.
A 1995 4.0 Ho with low miles ( engine only )
A 1996 Cherokee Body ( white ,which is the color of my 87) 4.0 XJ with motor and tranny ( unknown engine or tranny problems).
With these three things ,I should be able to combine into a solid running JEEP !!!
Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Blue XJ , I'll let you pick thru the left overs with some phone support or email support. gyotakurubbings@yahoo.com Alex
Thanks again
