Default engine swap.

my dad bought another 1994 cherokee sport for $500, engine has 145k miles on it i believe, but there is no noise coming from it like there is from my engine with 118k miles on it. he wants to do a swap, i'm still not sure about it. i haven't really gotten a chance to look at the other engine that much, but i know it runs. should i do the swap or just use the other engine for parts and get my engine to stop rattling?

I dunno about you but i'd never swap in a higher mileage engine. Why is yours making noises?

You could do a light rebuild on the 145k motor. The 118k motor might have been neglected compared to the 145k motor.

Freshen up or light rebuild involves. (To Me)

New oil pump and pickup tube
oil pan gasket
new crank and maybe rod bearings
new valve cover gasket
Scrub the top and bottom of motor and clean with kerocene
new water pump
new timing chain.
After new motor is running, two cans of combustion chamber cleaner.

Probably get another 100k+ out of the motor...until the valve seals go.

Everything above can be done with the engine on the stand...without having to do machine work.

If your motor is making lifter noise...Fix the lifters...If its rod or crank bearings knocking...replace motor as it will be cheaper than machine time to fix it.
