I’m about to replace the engine in my Cherokee it’s at 250,000 miles and has had some questionable work done to it by a previous owner and I’m not willing to sink the money into fixing it haha, where is a good place to get a crate replacement? It’s a 2000 XJ Sport with the 4.0L

Engine: 4.0 ATK New
My Son and I both bought ATK 4.0 motors 4 years ago and can recommend them. No issues. We bought direct from ATK and they were around $1,600 each (that's after the credit back for shipping old engine to them). We see the same ATK engines sold through Quadratec but they are marked up and price costs more if not ordering direct from ATK. ATK shipping for new engine and old engine back was easy.

It may be tempting to buy from a large engine builder for price or convenience but you’re asking for trouble in my opinion.
With a little research you can find a good machine shop or speed shop to build it locally. It may cost more and take longer but it’ll be done right.
A speed shop can break it in, and check for oil leaks and other issues before you install it.
