Engine sometimes revs than goes into gear.

Engine sometimes revs than goes into gear.
OK heres the problem. Sometimes when at a stop I go to gas the vehicle and it revs the engine for a second or 2 than the tranny engages with a hard bang. This happens while I am still in drive usually at a stop sign or intersection when I make a complete stop. It has been doing this for the last few year.
