Default Engine Question-noob

I bought an 01 sport with 150k I noticed a tick in the back of the engine on top, doing a tune up and when i pulled the valve cover the sludge is pretty damn bad, also noticed the sludge it worse in the back where the tick is. I used a vacuum and scraped away the chunks. Can i use break clean to finish the job? I know it will run down the motor, but i plan to do an oil change also. Last question, should i run Synthetic oil to help clean the top and bottom? My brother works at O'rileys and says NOT Seafoam but another kind of engine cleaner. Not sure how i feel about those hard engine cleans.

regular oil is fine. you'll need to keep an eye on the oil condition and change it as it gets dirty the first few times. it will gradually stay clean longer as you remove the sludge.

also a tick is indicative of a valvetrain problem. sludge removal may not fix the issue.

Okay cool.

As for the tick, it only happens at times while it's warming up. All the arms and everything are tight as well.

What kind of sludge? Are you losing coolant?

Are you sure it's coming from the engine and not from the evap purge solenoid, which is mounted on the firewall on the passenger side?

It sounds like it's on top of the motor. From inside the jeep it sounds a tad bit louder and does sound like it's right behind the dash on that passenger side-ish
I'll check it out!

Black with some chunks in the valve cover. Not sure about losing coolant, haven't noticed, also haven't drove it much yet. It is pretty nasty in the radiator though. Will be doing a flush of that.

Also found the throttle body to be very black haha as well as in the intake just under the hole. Cleaned the carbon from the throttle body. I assume the little bit that's in the intake will be okay?

Ill post pics.
