Default Emissions Recall E22: Check your VIN

I didn't find anything on search, so here goes:
I hope this saves someone some money.

Before I bought my 96 Cherokee SE last month, I ran the VIN in several places and found an open recall on it. I decided to buy the Jeep anyway, since the only thing wrong with it would be (was) fixed under this recall.

Emissions Recall E22 reprograms the ECM to recognize when the cat.conv. is failing, and inspects the cat to see if it has failed. If it has (usually has an internal rattle), the cat gets replaced free as well. If you replaced the cat and have receipts, you get reimbursed.

This only applies if you check your VIN against Chrysler's database and it comes up with this open recall. The recall also involves some 95 Cherokees and 97-98 Grand Cherokees.

My Cherokee is bone stock, a former fleet vehicle with 2WD and auto tranny. It is EPA rated at 22MPG, and was getting 17.7MPG at first check. I replaced the air filter and checked the tuneup parts out, they are pretty new. The new cat was installed today, and it's going to get a fillup of quality fuel with good injector cleaner in it, and we'll see what happens. Since I commute 80 mi. daily for classes and money's tight, I'm hoping for the best.

A fan shroud and K&N air filter are next.

This forum is cool...

I had that recall taken care of a few years back. They descibed as you did, and the CAT failed. It didn't hurt my feelings that they replaced it N/C.

If you have a 4.0L with auto, I would expect that you should get better mileage. Mine is 4wd, so always turning the front axles, and turned in 21.7mpg for 860 miles last weekend combined 70mph superslab and 35-55mph on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

I tracked the mileage pretty closely for the first year or so, and found that it delivered better mileage with 89 than 87. Percentage wise, it was more than enough to make up for the price difference. Switching to 92 didn't help at all.

I'll have to check out the 89 octane. Already put in Seafoam and filled up, so that'll be next fillup. My daily drive is about 60% highway, 30% city, 10% stop-n-go.

It's been my habit to track fuel economy with every fill for years. I treat the results as a "leading indicator" of what maintenance will be needed soon. I guess it works, I can count the number of times I've been stuck on the roadside on one hand, and I got my driver's license in 1970.

Have a good one.

Just thought I'd throw this out there. I was reading a article in PM about fuel additives and the article mentioned STP Gas Treatment increasing gas mileage. I never been one for snake oils but with gas prices the way they are I thought I'd try it. Well the stuff really works. I get 2 bottles for $3.25 at Dollar General. I run a bottle at every fill up in my Jeep, my wife's Blazer, the daughters VW Golf. Increases gas mileage in all almost 20 percent. Try it.

We just bought a 96 Jeep Grand Cherokee that didn't pass smog, the vehicle did get the recall E22 Service done back in 2008 but records show that the catalytic converter was not replaced. Is there any chance we can show that it should have been replaced? The dealership it was done at has since closed and we would have to take it to a Dodge dealership.
Any ideas? We are hoping this is not going to be a huge problem.
If I posted this in the wrong area please forgive!
