Red face Embarrassing question

Okay, so this is a pretty embarrassing question to have to ask, but I have done my searching and because the answer is so simple I cannot find it:

How do I turn my headlights to hi beam / brights in my 1987 Jeep Cherokee XJ?

Pull back on the turn signal stalk? Not sure about the 87s . Might be a round button on the floor you hit with your toe. Those are the only 2 ways Ive ever seen.

Well, no button on the floor, searched for that and the wires thinking maybe the previous owner had removed the switch. Also tried clicking the turn signal bar back, but it doesn't activate anything (likely because the previous owner had busted off the key in the lock cylinder and instead of removing it correctly he just hacked at the steering column with a crow bar and broke all kinds of stuff).

Any other methods? Perhaps a work around to activate them if the turn signal bar is the general method?

Clap twice...

JK, but yeah, try the obvious, pull back on the turn signal stalk, try pushing forward on it.

Also, like Troy Fritz said, there might be a small round button on the floor so you could hit it with your left foot. It may or may not be under the carpet...

meh, just saw your second post...

Look for any switches or weird out of place wires...

If you, might wanna go buy a 3 way switch and some wire. an on-off-momentary switch is ideal...

No carpet in this bad boy. I ripped that nasty stuff out when I bought it and put some Herculiner truck bed liner on the floor pans. I'll snap some photos of it and post some pics so everyone has a better idea of what I'm dealing with.

My guess after seeing those pics are that he broke something in that column. Cheapest and easiest would be to put a J/Y column in it. Sorry you are not here as I have a spare column. (grey, tilt)

Do you have any ideas on where to pick one up? What would be a fair price?

Ugh trashed column...I almost bought one like that. I'm glad I held out. The one I was looking at first that had the busted column was an 85 2wd and the 4 cyl

See that little metal bar? That's how I have to start the Jeep. Pull it back towards me until if fires up then let it go. Push it towards the dash to kill it. It's pretty ghetto but it still works and it was only $1500. Lotta life left in it for $1500!

Im not really sure i couldn't come up with a price either, and as far as starting with that upper actuator ( i believe thats what its called) good luck DIYing that yourself. i'm not sure how similar that is to ford but in my old truck that was the biggest pain in tha butt ever.
