Electrically issue (not a short)

Engine: 12 hole bosch Injectors
Not running I was just messing with the lights.
I was told in haynes manual to wire the electric fan directly to the battery which I tried and it kept giving sparks (when the wire touched the terminal) and the metal almost welded together which I stopped before something else happened. (fail)
Edit: What do you mean jump it? Do you mean wire it to the battery or have one wire connected to both leads like (+)---wire---(-) or (+)---wire----(+battery) (-)----wire----(- battery)
