Default Electrical issues !!

What's up guys I'm new to this just signed up but I got a 96 jeep Cherokee 4.0l v6 with some issues I can't seem to figure out. First, when I hit the brakes my dash lights come on with or w/o the car on. 2nd, the car will crank sometimes but mostly won't . My gen light would turn on when I would go to start the car I figured it was a dead battery or alt . Battery was bad and Alt was old so just changed both yesterday but my gen light still pops up and now it won't even crank. Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Check the connections of the wiring.

Try shifting it into neutral and start. If it works then the culprit would be the NSS; neutral safety switch.

See my sig #1.

It's a 21 year old car. Start cleaning all your grounds.

For the no-crank, see XJWonder's post above mine.

As far as the brake light issue, check behind the tail lights..the harness connections..if you find big green wads of aluminum oxidation, start by jumping all the affected connections. known issue on cherokee's.
