My check engine light came on earlier today and since I don't want to pay 40$ at the Jeep dealership for a code read I tried to read it myself by rotating the key to "on" while keeping the trip odometer button pressed. It does the 111111 through 999... check but in the end it doesn't show any codes. I tried the other thing with turning the ignition key on and off five times, then three times... nothing.
Anybody tried to do the same on a 2001 xj? what where your results ?
what am I doing wrong?
btw, please don't tell me to go to autozone or anything like it. I can't. I live in Romania and the only place that has the tester (that I know of) is the Jeep dealer.

 

I also have an 01XJ, and last month I had the Engine Light on with no code showing (the 111111, 222222, ... method).

I'm guessing that it isn't running rough or differently or you would have said so. Did you get gas before the light came on?

I tried a different gas cap and no more light.

i didn't try a different gas cap but...hmmm don't think I could find one, and gas I put a day before so don't think that it is the cap...
any other opinons ?

xjrev10, if you want to type something somewhere then use the notepad. If you want to be of help on a forum then think before you post. Being wrong when you want to help is something but posting just for the sake of -I don't know what ...that's a whole different story.
