Default Do i need the dust covers for my front wheel hubs?

I just bought a 2000 xj sport. The front hubs do not have the dust covers in the center of the wheels. It's just the exposed nut. Do I need them and where can I get them? It is stock.

yes they are there to protect and lenghten the life of the wheel bearings. the XJ will still drive without them but they're so cheap at a junk yard just go get a set for insurance.

It's even easier to buy new ones at a parts store.

I wouldnt necessary call them a "dust cover", but that weird 14 point cover and strange oblong washer that goes over the nut is there to brace the pin, to prevent premature wear and to keep it from moving. I dont see it keeping much dust out of anything.

The hubs are sealed on 4X4.

The 2-wheel drive vehicles have standard bearings with dust caps I believe.

Hubs are the same for 4x4 and 2x4, and are actually interchangeable. Only difference is that on the 2wd a faux stub shaft is used instead of an actual shaft. Other than that the hubs themselves are exactly the same.

Well I guess I was thinking too much "old school" on the 2WD stuff.

That's how alot of vehicle are, however jeep decided to keep everything basically the same between the 2wd and 4wd versions. The only real difference between the two front end wise is the lack of chunk and axle shafts. Everything else is the same.

Hubs for the 2WD and 4WD XJs are the same beginning some time during the '93 model year. Prior to that, 2WD models had standard bearings. I know because I needed new rotors for my '93 and carelessly ordered old style combination rotor/hubs and bearings from Rockauto. A real PITA to return because those rotors are HEAVY and I also had to convince RA that they were wrong for the '93, at least mine.

The last time I looked RA still lists both these and the new style unit bearing hubs for the '93 without comment.

Wasn't aware of that, my apologies. Maybe jeep came to their senses in the mid 90's?

I'm glad you posted that picture. I intended to, but didn't get around to it. That is what my front hubs look like. Is there a cover that goes over top of the nut?

That hub is a sealed unit. Dust can't get in there.
