Differentail sticking?

Differentail sticking?
I have a 1999 Jeep Cherokee 4.0.
Whenever, I put the jeep in 4x4 (part time, full time, 4LO)
And then put it in 2WD, the axles remain locked. the jeep wheel hops, very noticeable in sharp turns, or trying to park. there is a jerky pull on the steering wheel, it bounches, scheerches, and is a noticeable drag on the engine.
The problem goes away in a few days, but sometimes comes back intermittently.
What is causing this, does a stock jeep cherokee have a locking differential action that could be sticking?
