Default Difference in Cold air intake?

So i've decided that after tires, a cold air intake will be my next purchase.

I was wondering how much of a difference a decent cold air intake has on xj's. any info is much apreciated.

Works great, maybe a few HP but don't expect a "Kick in the pants" I have a CAI I got from here http://www.etrailer.com/p-AFE54-10422.html
and also had the Throttle Body bored here http://www.strokedjeep.com/tbody.html and you can feel a little difference in low and top end...Tj
Next step is to put in the bigger fuel injectors.

Trekker.. did you do the mods at different times? if at the same time the extra power is probably more from the bored TB than the CAI.

It's funny, I've always heard the opposite... that the bored TB doesn't really add performance gain, but that a true cold AI provides better torque and pickup (and a bit better gas consumption).

Which is it?

I would just go with the drop in K&N filter. You can pick them up for around $45-50. JMO

I am not a big fan of the CAIs... for the money I don't think they provide that much gain (if any). For one if they do not have a box or shield they are doing nothing more than sucking up hot air from the engine bay. If they do have a box typically the air is still being drawn from a small opening behind the headlight, so though it may be drawing cooler air it is still trying to get it from behind the headlight (restrictive).

I think the best CAI would be to a sealed box that draws air through a scoop in the hood similar to this.

Obviously this wouldn't be the best option for an off road vehicle that encounters water crossings, but then again a wheeler that encounters water crossings would rather have a high snorkel and deal with a potentially slight loss due to the length of the intake and the curves it would make to go from top of the window to the TB.

A CAI however maybe slightly above a TB as far as performance adding goes..

If you want a true CAI get a snorkel,in my opinion that is the only true CAI on an XJ.

X2 I must agree as there is no such thing as free HP gain. Cold air and cold fuel will give a tiny bit of HP however without extensive fuel intake and exhaust mods you wont get very much. Just like the NASCAR and Drag racers do

X2, with cowl intake mod comin in a close second. Any CAI under the hood of a XJ is stil sitting in an OVEN.

I think you are confusing a Bored TB with a TB spacer. Boring allow more air flow, more air flow means more power. TB Spacer, disrupts airflow and creates noise, noise makes you THINK you are creating power. Kinda the same thing as loud exhaust. High flowing exhaust creates power, but High flow doesn't have to be loud. Loud exhaust CAN be more powerful, even if only to the ear.

I fashioned a ram air (4" tube to the air box) on our Vue that takes advantage of the high pressure air in front of the grill at speed. Since we don't offroad, trying to figure a way to do the same to the XJ.

Yep, you're right, that's what I was thinking of. Thanks for clearing that up!

if you wheel, a rear locker is probably the best mod and doesnt really affect gas mileage
