Default Diff rattle/grind/noise

Since I got my Jeep (not long ago) there's been a rattle kind of noise coming from what I assume is the rear diff. Also, the mechanic that just replaced my tranny said it was the rear diff, so that makes sense.

Question is, what is it, and how can I fix it?

What did your mechanic say it was?

can this question come out any more vague? there are so many variables in a diff you need to give more info. have you every opened it up?

also I was born in greeley and grew up there. parents have a house over by the country club

I know it's a vague question, sorry. The mech just said it was the diff. I'll ask him more when I see him again.

Never opened it up myself, I don't assume anyone else has either. It only seems to make the noise when I'm stopped and in gear. It'll go away (as far as I can tell) when I let off the brake and accelerate. It definitely stops when I put it in park or neutral.

Haha, cool. With the way Greeley is, I probably know them, lol. I live right across from Central.

it could be a bearing or a gear or anything inside the diff. Like right now mine makes this really cool grinding noise

if there's a problem in there. Then your better off rebuilding it or getting a whole axle from a jy

Yeah, I was just looking at some rebuild kits. What's the time/difficulty like on that?

measuring and shiming the carrier bearing could be difficult if you've never done it before. They press on with a shop press. it has to be right or else all that work will be a waste of time and $$
