Default Dies offroad and will not restart for (roughly) 13 min.

Just like the title says, I will be wheeling along and she will die. she will crank hard and fine but will not fire up unless I let her set for 10 to 15 minutes. I have no control of when she will die or start again. I think it may be too hot under the hood.

For instance, I was stump climbing in my front yard for 10 minutes and she died.... 10 minutes of having the hood opened and waiting, I cranked her over and fired right up. Any thoughts of ideas? Thanks.

What is your temp like? What all have you checked already? It could be a number of things.

Alternator going out. Bad fuel pump. CPS.

The temp gauge doesn't work. I was maybe thinking that it was the coil system getting too hot or something. It is the 2.5L if that helps.

Kind of important to have that temp gauge working. I dont think I would even drive a vehical without a working temp gauge, something so simple but yet and can ruin a motor.

Sounds very likely that it's a thermal failure of the crank shaft position sensor!!

you need to see what your losing when it dies. spark?injector pulse?fuel pump? most likely cause would be pickup coil in distributor which is a common failure item. next would be crank sensor, either can be checked with a meter. if not available, when dead put ice or air from compressor on distributor and see if it starts.pickup in dist. crank sensor on bellhousing.

I have had the same problem with other types of vehicles and it was worn out spark plugs. Something to check on.

Typical cam sensor (AKA pickup coil) failure.

I gota brand new cap, wires and rotor along with plugs. I don't have even 1,000 miles on them yet.

What do I need to check, rember it is the 2.5L ( 4 banger )

I don't know if the parts suggested to be checked are even on the 2.5L. Thanks for all of the replies, lets keep 'em coming.

When it craps out on you, check for spark. No spark? Check for voltage at the ignition coil, and for a pulsing ground at the coil. It can be checked with a simple 12 volt test light. No voltage means you have an open circuit someplace. No pulsing ground means you have a failed crank sensor or cam sensor. By what you described, it sounds like a cam sensor failing when it gets hot. It's cheap and super easy to replace, it's right under the distributor cap.

Default Update, NO SPARK

Today I went on a small mud run, same old song and dance.

I checked for spark, nothing. I let it set 15 minutes (or so) and she fired right up with spark.

Do the 2.5L have a cam position sensor and crank position sensor, my book says the 2000 4.0's have cam position sensors and nothing more. Any body have an answer? Thanks for the help.
