Defiance665 and 4Doors, ive been looking into using higher zinc in oil and just have a 2 question i havent been able to find.
I understand the wear factor so using higher zinc makes since but i have a 00 xj and wondering will that destroy my cat? and would rotella 5-40 be good on a 00 with 116k miles or is that only good on older engines?

This argument comes up alot.. The most common answer is "how often did you hear of cats failing when SL/SJ oils where common? Never!"

If youre not burning oil I wouldnt worry about it.

How hot does it get where you are? If it doesnt get too warm, go with a 30wt. If it gets pretty hot, you tow alot, or youre engine is kinda worn, use the 40.

The thing about rotella is its a "Mixed Fleet" oil, it is still SM rated which means it has low levels of Zinc, though it is probably on the high end of the spectrum since it has to meet diesel standards. If you dont care about dino or syn. I would get something like Delo or Valvoline diesel in the blue jug (it is marked 'meets cummins specs'). The rotella should be fine though, if you want to run it.

ya i live in Indiana so it doesnt get too hot. wont be towing but drive 30mins on highway speeds everyday. Im a 2.2 turbo dodge guy trying to do right with my new jeep. ive never thought about the zinc in oil or the lack there of until reading that post.

You said if im not burning oil dont worry about it. What wont you worry about switching over to a higher zinc? or regardless of oil leaks i should still switch over to a higher zinc oil.

I work for an auto parts store so price doesnt worry me too much, but then again i dont want to over kill it either.

if youre not burning oil dont worry about the extra zinc, the way it gets into the cat/exhaust is excess valvetrain wear or bad rings.

30wt should be fine, you could go to a 10w40 if you want (some 5w40 is available too, dont remember what brand). Some people say the 40wt will reduce MPG, but Ive never noticed anything.

Like I said, rotella should be fine. Most diesel oils are pretty cheap anyway.
(anything diesel should work, Im gonna use Motorcraft Diesel 10w40 next change. 1300PPM Zinc.)
If you want to go the expensive route you can get Mobil 1 High Mileage, its SL rated and has good amounts of Zinc.
