never said or acted like i needed to be right all the time... what you posted right now makes more sence to say... but what you said before was wrong... and wrong information on a quesiton leads to problems for the one who asking it... so i was making it RIGHT before he listed to what you said and spent all this money only to need to spend more and have his jeep not drivable for some time... its not about always being right... its about what is right and what is not... that is why i posted other threads to back up what i was saying... so i wasnt just talking our of my *** like yourself...
"I went to 4.56s and I had to buy the different carriers. That is all I can speak for positive. That was my personal experience."
this is what you should have said at first...

little side note... a Dana 44 out of a TJ uses the same axle shaft as the Dana 44 from the XJ and MJ... spline count and length are the same

Good heavens ... all the confusion out in this thread. Scary !
Lemme give a fast breakdown to try and help out ....
D44 carrier break is 3.73 down (fast carrier) and 3.92 up (slow carrier). You can install "thick" gears onto a fast carrier. This will allow you to run something like, say, a 4.56 ratio without requiring a carrier/locker change.
For the *most* part ... the centersections on the D44s are all the same. The exception starts around 2005 on the TJ44s. What spicer did was move the carrier shims to the outside of the bearings (rather than under the bearings). In this manner, it would be like setting the backlash on a D35. Meaning all shimming is down between the carrier & the housing now. For what it's worth ... still the same bearings and carriers. Different side shims are simply required. This was done to consolidate inventory with the Rubicon 44 housing.
There is no difference in the TJ or XJ D44 pinion or ring gears. I could take a ring gear from a Scout 44 ... and put it in either housing if i chose to (carrier issues aside). Now .. if this was one of those aluminum D44s --- Those are indeed a different animal (Corvette & Jaguar used the same style R&P -- useless FYI).
You can indeed swap the XJ and TJ 44 shafts all day long. MJ 44 as well. The housings are more or less identical (with the exception of suspension mounting points). The XJ and MJ D44 had much larger brakes than the TJ's originally came with. However, TJ D44s started to a disc brake option. It has *also* been said that the XJ D44 has thicker tubing than the TJ one -- however, I have yet to verify this and is really a moot point, in my opinion.
