Friend needs his front D30 swapped and wants me to do it. He's asking me for a price. I don't know what to tell him. What do you guys think is fair?
$300? Too much? More?

Making me feel bad here. Hahaah.
Actually he's not really a friend. He's more of a "Hey Hudson, my jeeps broke. I need x done. How much"?
Then he proceeds to stand around and watch until i'm done then leaves. That's the only time i ever see him and or hear from him.
$100 sound better? Honestly i don't even know where to start.

I actually haven't swapped a front axle in an XJ. Maybe $100-$200, depending how long it takes. You might try telling him, "Drop it off at 7 on Friday night, and I'll call you when it's done." Then make sure you're gone at that time, and hope he just leaves the keys with your wife. I can't stand when people stand and look over my shoulder the whole time I'm working...it's distracting.
EDIT:
Dammit, just saw the rest of the posts.
Charge him money if he's not a friend. I'd probably do at least 200. 300 if he watches.

As a shop I would charge $350 and that includes dropping the cover and doing a quick inspection before install and new fluid. That is cheap for my area so depending on what the going rates are in your area I would say 200-300 sounds fair. Since this is your first time it can take longer as we all know.

^^Agreed..
$200 if dropped off..
$400 if he wants to help..
$600 if he wants to supervise..
Seriously though, whats your time/skills/tool investment worth? I have quite a few "customers" that know i do Jeep work correctly and at signifigant savings over a shop rate of 75-100 per hour. I appreciate the sidework and they appreciate an honest job for an honest rate.
